        Why Australia Should Change               The Main Energy Sources in Australia Australia’s main energy sources are fossil fuels, natural gases, hydroelectric, and wind energy. Most of Australia’s electricity generation is from black coal. Black coal pollutes the air and we will soon run out of it. Most coal comes from Queensland and Western Australia.The Australian government says that renewable energy is too expensive but, they will soon change their mind as the price for fossil fuels rises. The percentages for electricity generation are 24.8% brown coal, 0.2% biomass, 0.2% solar (utility), 5.2% wind energy, 7.3% hydro 52.4% black coal,               Hydroelectric Power in Australia Hydroelectric is one of the main renewable energy sources in Australia. Most dams are in Tasmania however, the biggest organisation for wind energy is the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme which focuses on NSW and Victoria. In the NSW and Victoria there are 16 major dams and for Australia there are 120 operating hydroelectric power stations. The Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme started in 1949 and opened in 1972. Hydroelectric power provides nearly ? of the world’s electricity generation.                       Solar Energy in Australia The Australian government does not use much solar power however a lot of Australian citizens use rooftop solar and small scale solar. In 2013, one million solar PV systems were downloaded in Australia. Most solar plants are in Western Australia because that is the sunniest region of Australia. Australia has been using rooftop solar since the 1960’s.                     Wind Energy in Australia A lot of research on renewable energy in Australia is done by ARENA (Australian renewable energy agency) so special thanks to ARENA. Wind energy in Australia is getting more and more popular over the years. Wind energy is the fastest growing renewable energy source in Australia at 4.9% of the total energy sources used for electricity generation in Australia. Wind energy skyrocketed in 2016: they added 44 wind turbines and that can generate just under 140 megawatts. This brought Australia to a total of 79 wind farms that can generate 4237 megawatts of electricity with-2106 turbines, placing Australia 17th in the world for wind energy. In 2017, researchers found out that wind energy was growing and provided 42.3% of Australia’s renewable energy consumption an 11.5% increase than the previous year!                      Fossil Fuels in Australia Most of Australia’s coal mines are in Queensland and Western Australia. Fossil fuels are mined and then burned in power stations which creates steam and moves a rotor that generates electricity. The electricity is then transported to substation transformers that raise the voltage of the electricity so it can be transported to major cities like Sydney and Canberra. It is then transported to another substation transformer that lowers the voltage of the electricity. Finally, it is transported to houses and buildings via power lines. The electricity can be transferred into chemical energy with a battery or kinetic energy with electric cars.                              Recommendations The amount of renewable energy Australia uses is quite low therefore, they as a developed country should keep up with the modern technology and build more solar plants and wind farms. They should use use solar energy because there is a hole in the ozone layer so we get lots of sunlight as well as in summer, the earth’s orbit positions Australia closer to the sun. Also, they should use wind because Australia has a lot of flat plains that will not absorb the wind.              Advantages and Disadvantages Pros of fossil fuels: they are cheap; it is easy to transport fossil fuels; it is a very easy process to burn fossil fuels; it is very easy to set up fossil fuel plants unlike renewable resources like solar plants that need sunny areas for it to work; even a tiny bit of coal can create a lot of electricity. Cons of fossil fuels: we do not have an infinite supply of fossil fuels; in the process of burning fossil fuels it emits greenhouse gases that can harm our environment and cause global warming and harm us; fossil fuels cannot be recycled; it pollutes the ocean. Pros of renewable energy: we have an infinite supply of renewable energy; it is cheaper in the long run; it does not harm the environment; it is reliable.
