Edward LeeThibeault English 324 January 2018Literary Device: MotifDefinition: “Motif is an object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work. In a literary work, a motif can be seen as an image, sound, action, or other figure that has a symbolic significance, and contributes toward the development of a theme. Motif and theme are linked in a literary work, but there is a difference between them. In a literary piece, a motif is a recurrent image, idea, or symbol that develops or explains a theme, while a theme is a central idea or message.””Motif.” Literary Devices, 2018. Web.Example: “I lived at West Egg, the-well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them” (Fitzgerald 5)Fitzgerald, F. The Great Gatsby. Scribner. New York. Charles Scribner Sons. 2004. Print. Function:Context: In the first few pages of the novel The Great Gatsby, by F.Scott Fitzgerald, the narrator, main character Nick Carraway moves from his city to a new place called “West Egg”. West Egg is across from East Egg, where Tom and Daisy lives. Their houses are separated by a body of water between the two. The area is U-shaped with the body of water in the middle. West Egg is the less fashionable of the two. Concept: The many geographical places and areas in The Great Gatsby shows how important each area is in the story. In the book, West Egg, East Egg, the Midwest, and the Valley of Ashes are mentioned multiple times proving that these areas are important. Nick comes from the Midwest, where he thought everything was boring for him so he decided to move. He moved to West Egg where he met Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. West egg and East Egg are really important because Tom and Gatsby’s houses are across from each other. Nick also lives next to Gatsby who also knows Daisy, the girl that Gatsby likes, which shows that this is not some sort of coincidence. The fact that Gatsby and Daisy are across each other from the lake is very important.
